How to Use Text to Speech (TTS) Natural Reader

  1. Step 1: Paste or type the text you want spoken into the main textarea (works with long articles).
  2. Step 2: Select a voice from the dropdown — filter by language if your system has many locales installed.
  3. Step 3: Set speech rate (0.5×–2×) and pitch, then press Play to start reading from the top.
  4. Step 4: Use Pause / Resume / Stop to control playback while reading along in the text box.
  5. Step 5: If your browser exposes speech download (e.g. some Chromium builds), export the audio; otherwise use OS screen recording for archival.

About Text to Speech (TTS) Natural Reader

This tool wraps the W3C Web Speech API SpeechSynthesis interface. The browser exposes a list of SpeechSynthesisVoice objects installed by the OS or browser (Siri voices on macOS/iOS, Google US English on Chrome, etc.). Speaking splits text into utterance chunks — many engines cap single-utterance length, so long documents are queued as sequential utterances to avoid mid-sentence cutoffs. Rate multiplies default speaking speed (1.0 = nominal); pitch shifts fundamental frequency (1.0 = neutral). Voices are resolved by name and language code (lang like en-US) when the user picks a locale. All synthesis runs inside the local speech engine when one exists (cloud voices may be used by the OS for some premium voices — the page itself never POSTs your text). Pause uses synthesis.pause() and resume() rather than restarting, preserving position. Edge cases: empty input shows a clear error; very large pastes (>~100k chars) are accepted but chunked for queue stability; if no voices load (headless environments), the UI explains that voices appear after the browser finishes enumerating asynchronously via voiceschanged.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my text uploaded for synthesis?

No. The Web Speech API synthesizes on-device when a local voice is selected; this page never uploads your text to its own servers.

Why is the voice list empty?

Some browsers populate voices asynchronously — the tool listens for the voiceschanged event. Fresh profiles or privacy modes may expose fewer voices.

Can I download an MP3 file?

The standard Web Speech API does not expose a file stream. Where a browser offers capture, download appears; otherwise record system audio with an external recorder.

Does it work on mobile?

Yes on modern iOS Safari and Android Chrome — available system voices appear in the dropdown and speak through the device TTS engine.

What is the max text length?

Practical limits depend on device memory; multi-thousand-word articles work by chunking into queued utterances.
