About Date Difference & Working Days Calculator
Calendar day count is the millisecond difference between the two local midnights divided by 86,400,000, which is exact even across DST transitions because both endpoints sit at 00:00 local time. Weeks are floor(totalDays ÷ 7) with totalDays mod 7 as the remainder. Approximate months use the standard borrow algorithm: multiply the year gap by 12, add the month-index gap, then decrement if the end day-of-month is smaller than the start day-of-month — the same correction used in age calculators. Working days are counted by iterating each calendar day in the half-open interval [start, end), classifying Sundays and Saturdays as weekends, matching a stringified YYYY-MM-DD date against the US federal holiday list (New Year, MLK Day, Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas), and tallying the rest as weekdays. Holidays that fall on weekdays are counted as working days by default and removed only when Exclude US Public Holidays is checked, matching how most payroll systems treat paid holidays. The visualization encodes workingDays/totalDays, weekends/totalDays, and holidays/totalDays as flex widths so the three segments always sum to 100% of the range. Empty or inverted ranges are handled by automatic swap, and the tool surfaces both formatted endpoints so you can audit what was actually measured.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are the US holidays movable feasts like Thanksgiving correct for every year?
The list includes fixed-date holidays (Jan 1, Jul 4, Dec 25) and well-known 2026 observance dates for MLK, Presidents, Memorial, Labor, and Thanksgiving. Always verify against OPM.gov for payroll-critical calculations in other years.
Why do holidays count as working days by default?
A weekday is still a weekday for capacity planning; many teams prefer to see raw Mon–Fri counts. Enable Exclude US Public Holidays when you need "office open" days instead.
Does the calculation handle date ranges that cross a leap day?
Yes. Feb 29 appears as a regular calendar day in the iteration, so ranges spanning leap years count it correctly without special-casing.
What does the direction label mean?
If you entered end before start, the tool swaps them internally and reports direction "backward" so the magnitude stays positive while you still see which date came first.
Is my schedule data sent anywhere?
No — all counting runs in local JavaScript state. Date ranges for sensitive legal or HR matters never leave the browser.
